All Microsoft Word documents contain styles – even if you haven’t applied one. New blank Word documents are based on the Normal template, and text that you type uses the Normal style.

One way of seeing what styles are in your document is to expose the Style Area Pane in the Draft and Outline views.
In Word 2010, go to the File tab, click Options, and click Advanced. Under Display, set the width of the Style area pane width in Draft and Outline views to 1 inch or so.
Click OK. Now when you go to Draft or Outline view, you’ll see the style for each paragraph shown in the column to the left of your text.
Display the Apply Styles task pane. Display the Styles task pane. There’s an unofficial shortcut to open the Navigation Pane – Ctrl + F. In earlier versions of Word Ctrl + F opened the “Find and Replace” dialog – now it opens the Navigation Pane to the Results panel. In the Headings panel, right-click to see ways to move about content, promote/demote heading and create new headings.
To remove the Style area pane, grab the vertical black line with your cursor and drag it to the left.

- Styles have to be manually added or removed from the Style Gallery, usually a right-click will show the ‘Add’ or ‘Remove’ option. Styles can have shortcut keys to apply it. Headings have default shortcuts Ctrl + Alt + number for Heading 1, Heading 2 etc.
- Mac Word has significantly less to offer in terms of Style management, the dialog in the screen shot being one of the lacking features. The Styles Pane Phillip referred to has a List option to select which group of Styles to be displayed but offers none of the other choices.
The Selection pane allows you to find and edit objects in a Word document. Open the Word document in which you want to open the Selection pane. Select the Layout or Page Layout tab. Choose Selection Pane in the Arrange group. The task pane will open to the right of the document. Option + F7 Find the next misspelling or grammatical error. The Check spelling as you type check box must be selected (Word menu, Preferences command, Spelling and Grammar). ⌘ + Shift + L.

Click the dialog box launcher in the lower-right corner of the Styles group to view the Styles pane, also shown. To dismiss the Styles pane, click the X (Close) button in its upper-right corner.
The Styles pane lists more styles than the Style Gallery, including styles you’ve created.
To preview the styles in the Styles pane, put a check in the box by the Show Preview option, found at the bottom of the Styles pane.
You can see more information about a style by simply hovering the mouse pointer over the style’s name in the Styles pane.
To view all available styles in the Styles pane, click the Options link (in the lower-right corner). In the Styles Pane Options dialog box, choose All Styles from the Select Styles to Show menu. Click OK.
Word’s predefined styles are specified in the Style Gallery, though you can customize the list to replace Word’s styles with your own.
